A bedtime story about not wasting what you have
The Owl Who Turned Off the Lights
A very short story about bright rooms, dark rooms, and the kingdom's gold.
-
Every night, the castle blazed with light — every room, every hall, even the empty ones.
-
And every morning, a little of the kingdom's gold had quietly melted away.
-
“Where does it all go?” asked the Princess.
“Into rooms where no one sleeps,” said the owl. -
So each night the owl walked the halls with a small lantern — the gentle Prince beside it — turning down the lights where no one was.
-
“You don't light a whole hall,” said the owl, “for one small owl.”
So they lit only what they used. -
And when everyone slept, the castle dimmed itself low — then woke bright when they did.
-
The gold they saved did not sit idle.
It built a taller tower, a warmer hearth, a new bell. -
Now the castle shines only where it should — bright where it matters, dark where it rests.
And the owl, one blue eye and one crimson, kept watch.
Goodnight.
